HPU Softball #20 In Final Poll
Starkville, MS (6/1/09) – The HPU softball team received a #20 ranking in the final NFCA National Poll. The announcement was made today by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association national office.
The NFCA Division II Top 25 Poll is voted on by 16 NCAA Division II head coaches, two representing each of the eight NCAA regions.
The Sea Warriors closed the season at the NCAA West Region Championships, falling to Dixie State who advanced to the Division II College World Series after winning the Super Regional.
HPU posted a 5-3 regular season record against teams ranked in the final Top 25 Poll, including a 3-2 win against eventual National Champion and top-ranked Lockhaven University.
HPU earned eight selections to the PacWest All-Conference Team, with four Sea Warriors receiving All-Region honors. HPU won their third PacWest Title in as many seasons, and finished with 42 wins, fourth highest in program history.
HPU Softball: A Season To Remember
They were almost there. Two wins and the regional title was theirs. Senior pitcher Courtney Kessell had seized the moment, and with a 2-0 lead in the final inning, was on the verge of sending HPU to a winner take all game for the championship. Moments later, a three-run triple by Dixie State gave them the lead, ending HPU’s season in the blink of an eye.
Amidst the heartache and disappointment was a proud and overachieving Sea Warrior softball team, one that seized every opportunity it was presented. A win over top-ranked Lockhaven, a rousing sweep of Dixie State, and an unprecedented first-place finish at the Mizuno Tournament of Champions highlighted a magnificent season.
HPU had climbed the West Region rankings each week. By the close of the regular season they had claimed their third consecutive PacWest title, and earned a trip to St. George, Utah for the NCAA Regional Championships.
As the region’s second-seeded team, HPU felt they had earned the right to host – not PacWest rival Dixie State. The Sea Warriors were 68-3 at home over the past two seasons, so playing at the friendly confines of Howard A. Okita Field would certainly have been an advantage. The NCAA’s decision was confusing, puzzling, but most of all disappointing.
But the team embraced the reality of having to win on the road, and headed out with every bit the confidence of a 40-10 team.
HPU opened with a confident 2-1 win over UC-San Diego, and defeated the Tritons again, this time in an elimination game. Krystal Plunkett’s late inning homerun propelled HPU to championship day and its matchup with Dixie State.
The individual accomplishments were numerous. Plunkett and Kessell departed as Sea Warrior greats, holding 13 HPU records between them. Plunkett was named PacWest Player of the Year, Kessell as Pitcher of the Year, and Maile Kim as Freshman AND Newcomer of the Year. Bryan Nakasone also earned Coach of the Year honors in his first season as head coach.
Deemed unfit for post-season play a year ago (HPU went 43-5-1 in 2008 but received no at-large bid), the Sea Warriors were regarded this season as one of the west’s top teams. Under the watchful eye of the West Region, HPU’s returning group will have to prove next season they were worthy of such reverence.
HPU Softball Signs Recruit Chelsea Luckey
Honolulu, HI (5/18/09) – The HPU softball team signed pitcher Chelsea Luckey to a National Letter of Intent, announced today by the Hawai‘i Pacific University athletics office.
Luckey joins the Sea Warriors as a true freshman from San Clemente High School in California, and played her club ball for the Worth Firecrackers and California Desperados.
“We are looking to develop Chelsea’s pitching and hitting skills,” said HPU Coach Bryan Nakasone. “She can be a very versatile player for us, and we hope to use her in many positions.”
Luckey played a key role for San Clemente this past season, as the Lady Tritons earned their first CIF (California Interscholastic Federation) Division I playoff berth in six years.
The Sea Warriors concluded the 2009 season at the NCAA Regional Tournament, falling to Dixie State College in the championship game. HPU finished the season with 42 wins, fourth highest in program history.
HPU Softball Signs Two From Sidewinders Fastpitch Club
Honolulu, HI (5/15/09) – The HPU softball team signed two recruits to National Letters of Intent, announced today by the Hawai‘i Pacific University athletics office. Freshmen Erin Fujita and Nicole Morrow, teammates at the Washington Sidewinders Fastpitch Club, will join the Sea Warriors for the 2010 season.
Fujita comes to HPU from Thomas Jefferson High School in Auburn, Washington, where she earned All-League and All-State honors. Last season she batted .537 with a slugging percentage of .780.
“Erin will see most of her time at first base or in the outfield,” comments HPU coach Bryan Nakasone. “She bats from the left side and has a bit of power to go the opposite way.”
Morrow played her high school ball in Puyallup, Washington at John Rogers High School. Last season she batted .500 with a .625 slugging percentage, and was selected to the Tacoma News Tribune All-Area First-Team, in addition to earning All-League honors.
“We need to replace some of the power we will be losing in Krystal (Plunkett),” says Nakasone. “We are hoping Nicole can come in and provide that for us. She is a pitcher by trade, but we might use her in other positions to take advantage of her bat.”
The Sea Warriors recently concluded their season at the NCAA Regional Tournament where they fell to Dixie State in the championship game. HPU finished the season with 42 wins, fourth highest in program history.
HPU Softball Earns Regional Honors

Musquiz and Kessell were the PacWest’s top two pitchers, leading the conference in ERA and wins. Musquiz was 21-4 with a 1.19 ERA, followed by Kessell who posted a 20-8 record with a 1.58 ERA. Waipahu, HI (2/7/09) – At Central Oahu Regional Park, HPU swept a doubleheader softball matchup from Chaminade. HPU topped the Swords 10-0 in the opener, then took game two 10-0. Both games were won by the mercy rule.
Game one saw 10 of HPU's first 11 batters reach base in the nine-run first inning. The Sea Warriors added one more run in the fourth inning to set the stage for the mercy rule.
Seniors Krystal Plunkett and Ciera Senas were the driving force behind HPU's win. Senas batted 3-4 with two runs and one RBI, and Plunkett was 3-4 with one run and two RBI.
Courtney Kessell (2-0) earned the win for HPU, working four innings allowing no runs on three hits with three strikeouts.
Kasy'e Lalau (0-2) was hit with the loss for the Silverswords. She was relieved by Chelsea Walls who pitched 4.2 innings allowing one run on six hits.
Game two featured more of the same. Another big first inning sparked an early rout, as four Sea Warriors crossed home plate in the first inning. In the fifth inning HPU closed door, as Plunkett crushed a two-run homerun over the left centerfield fence for the 10-1 lead.
Casey Sugihara paced HPU batting 3-4 with three runs and two RBI.
Kelly-Grace Saniatan led CUH with a 2-3 performance at the plate.

Sea Warrior Softball Eye Opening Day
HPU enter the 2009 season with as much excitement and optimism as any season in the history of the program. The 2008 campaign saw some of the best statistical performances, team and individual, of any HPU team. Thirteen players earned conference or regional post-season honors, highlighted by pitcher Courtney Kessell (Waimanalo, HI) who was selected as the Pacific West Conference Pitcher of the Year and was named First-Team All-Region. The team finished 43-5-1 for the highest statistical winning percentage in the nation.
“We are expecting fierce competition within the PacWest,” comments Co-Head Coach Bryan Nakasone. “All the programs have improved and are seeking to knock us off this season. We need solid leadership and sacrifices from our seniors.”
Despite the phenomenal year and a PacWest crown, HPU did not receive a selection to the West Region Championships and an opportunity to make a run at the NCAA National Tournament. The Sea Warriors can take solace that such a situation will not arise again. The NCAA granted the PacWest an automatic post-season berth to the conference winner, and a reason for great optimism for the two-time conference champions.
OUTFIELD
HPU returns two of the PacWest's top players from 2008. Junior Tajia Acierto (Kapolei, HI) and senior Ciera Senas (Wahiawa, HI) return to lead the Sea Warriors in the field and at the plate. Acierto was a mainstay at centerfield, missing just one game the entire season. She batted .313 and posted 23 runs, 33 RBI and six homeruns. Acierto was selected to the PacWest All-Conference Second-Team.
Senas enters this season after earning First-Team All-PacWest and Second-Team All-West Region selections in 2008. She played in 46 games and batted .346 with five doubles, six triples, and 10 RBI. She and Acierto will be key to HPU's success.
Adding to the mix will be returnee Ashley Fernandez who enters her second and final season with HPU. Fernandez (Lana'i City, HI) saw action last season as a pinchrunner. She appeared in 40 games and scored 18 runs.
INFIELD
HPU will see no shortage of talent around the diamond. Krystal Plunkett (Pearl City, HI) returns as one of the most prolific hitters in Sea Warrior history. A fixture on post-season region and conference teams, shortstop Plunkett batted a conference-high .434 with eight homeruns, 42 RBI, and a .673 slugging percentage.
Senior returnee Nicole Riviera (Hilo, HI), and juniors Laine Shikuma (Hilo, HI) and Casey Sugihara (Mililani, HI) also return to anchor the infield. Riviera started all but one game last season and recorded 51 putouts and 67 assists. Sugihara has been a mainstay since she came to the program two seasons ago. In 2008 she batted .322 and was second on the team in runs scored (34) and doubles (9). She earned a Second-Team All-PacWest selection. Shikuma made a huge impact last season, seeing action in 37 games after being played sparingly in 2007. She batted .417 and recorded three doubles and 10 RBI. She will also be vying for a starting position in the outfield.
“We also have the luxury behind the dish,” says Nakasone of his catchers. “Kozy Toriano, Charte Stewart, and Maile Kim will support each other at this position. They can also play various positions to support our defense.”
Sophomore Kozy Toriano (Hilo, HI) and junior Charte Stewart (Norco, CA) will vie for time behind the plate. Toriano returns for her second season after a solid freshman campaign. She saw action in 36 games and posted a .333 batting average. Toriano and newcomer Stewart will battle for the starting spot vacated by Anuhea Young who graduated last year.
PITCHER
Stopping the Sea Warriors will be a challenge for any opponent, but handling their pitching staff might be the tallest order. Senior Courtney Kessell (Waimanalo, HI) and junior Sherise Musquiz (Pico Riviera, CA) return to shutdown opposing batters.
“We also return a dynamic pitching duo in Courtney and Sherise,” praises Nakasone. “Also, both will have a bullpen that has been impressive in the fall workouts.”
Last season, Kessell delivered one of the finest season performances in HPU history. She posted a 23-2 mark which included two no-hitters. She finished with a 1.68 ERA to go along with 132 strikeouts and 15 shutouts. She was named First-Team All-West Region team for her stellar season.
Musquiz, a 2008 First-Team All-PacWest selection, was equally as effective at shutting down opposing batters. Last season she was 19-3 and held team-lows in ERA (1.52) and opposing batting average (.201). Sophomore Ashley Valine will look for playing time as a short relief pitcher.
Freshman newcomers Breanne Patton (Ewa Beach, HI) and Melissa Kirby (Manassas, VA) will also look to see time on the mound. Patton earned Hawai'i All-State honors last season and Kirby was a high school All-Region selection.
“Currently we are preparing our offense to become more aggressive but more patient at the plate,” adds Nakasone. “The rookies are really grasping the concept of becoming better hitters and everyone is preparing well for the upcoming season.”
Howard Okita Retires As HPU Head Coach
Honolulu, HI (12/31/08) – After 15 years of leading Hawaii Pacific University softball, Coach Howard Okita is stepping down as Head Coach of the Sea Warriors effective immediately.
“This will give me more time to spend with family,” said Okita. “My grand-daughter is a junior on the East Carolina softball team, and now I can take time to travel and see her play.”
Okita steps down as the most successful skipper in HPU softball history. In his 15 seasons, he posted a 508-214-3 record with 11 post-season appearances.
Prior to leading HPU, Okita was the Head Coach of Hawaii Loa College, where he led the Mongoose to the 1991 NAIA National Championship. He joined the Sea Warriors as the Assistant Coach following the merger between HLC and Hawaii Pacific College, and was handed the reigns in 1994.
Okita will stay on with the Sea Warriors as the Assistant Coach under Bryan Nakasone, who served as the Co-Head Coach with Okita since 2002.
“I’ll still remain very involved with the program,” said Okita. “I’ll be working with Bryan (Nakasone) on handling the administrative aspects of the team.”
Okita will also continue to maintain the recently named Howard A. Okita Field, one of the finest athletic complexes in Hawaii.

HPU named NCAA Division II Statistical Champion For Winning Percentage
Indianapolis, IN (7/1/08) – The Hawai‘i Pacific University softball team was named as the 2008 NCAA Division II statistical champion, announced today by the NCAA national office. HPU boasted a 43-5-1 overall record good for a .896 winning percentage.
Despite finishing the season on an 18-game win streak, HPU continued to drop in the West Region poll over the final month of the season, dropping one spot in each of the last two weeks. The 2008 team hold the program’s all-time highest winning percentage for a season, yet became the first 40-win team to not advance to postseason play. HPU are also the first team to post an undefeated record in the state of Hawai‘i.
In addition to the national recognition, 13 Sea Warriors received regional or conference recognition, highlighted by junior pitcher Courtney Kessell (Waimanalo, HI) who was named to the Daktronics First-Team All-Region Team. At one point midway through the season, Kessell held the nation’s lowest ERA at 0.40.
Sea Warriors Dominate All-Conference Honors
Queen Creek, AZ (5/22/08) – 10 Sea Warriors were selected to the PacWest All-Conference Softball Team, announced today by the conference office. The 10 selections were twice as many as Dixie State and Grand Canyon, who each had five players earning honors.
Courtney Kessell's brilliant season was capped with her selection as PacWest Pitcher of the Year. The Waimanalo, HI native and Kailua High School graduate led the conference with a 23-2 record and 1.68 ERA. First baseman Nicole Kalakau (Waimanalo, HI) and shortstop Krystal Plunkett (Pearl City, HI), along with pitcher Sherise Musquiz (Pico Rivera, CA) rounded out the First-Team infield honorees.
Musquiz was equally as stellar as her partner in crime, finishing the season 19-3 with a 1.52 ERA. Plunkett was also selected to the Daktronics All-West Region Team.
Designated player Jessica Adolph (Moreno Valley, CA) and left fielder Ciera Senas (Mililani, HI) also received selections to the First-Team. Both players were also selected to the NFCA All-West Region Team. Earning Second-Team honors were second baseman Casey Sugihara (Mililani, HI) catcher Anuhea Young (Kahaluu, HI), and centerfielder Tajia Acierto (Kapolei, HI).
Co-Head Coaches Howard Okita and Bryan Nakasone were selected as Coaches of the Year. Earlier this season, with Nakasone at his side, Okita earned his 600th win as Head Coach of the Sea Warriors.
Senas and Adolph Earn NFCA Honors
Starkville, MS (5/12/08) – HPU softball players Jessica Adolph and Ciera Senas were named to the 2008 Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Region Team, as announced today by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association office. Adolph was named to the First-Team as a utility player and Senas earned a Second-Team selection as an outfielder.
Adolph, a senior from Moreno Valley, California, found her playing time this season at third base and as a designated player, seeing action as a pitcher as well. She started 47 of HPU’s 49 games, posting a .355 batting average, along with 49 hits, 13 doubles, one homerun, and 28 RBI.
Senas, a sophomore out of Mililani High School, was a major spark for the Sea Warriors this spring. She started 44 games, batting .346 with 35 runs scored, 54 hits, five doubles, and a team-high six triples. She also stole a team-high seven bases. Senas was sure-handed in the field as well, boasting a .982 fielding percentage as a centerfielder.
The Sea Warriors finished the season as the PacWest Conference champions with a 43-5-1 record, but did not receive a selection to post-season play.
HPU’s Courtney Kessell Earns All-Region Honors
Honolulu, HI (5/7/08) – HPU softball star Courtney Kessell, in recognition of her record-setting season, earned First-Team honors for the Daktronics All-West Region Team.
Also earning regional honors were junior shortstop Krystal Plunkett and sophomore centerfielder Ciera Senas, each selected to the Daktronics West Region Second Team.
The junior pitcher was the ace on a staff that led the Sea Warriors to HPU’s third highest overall record and the Pacific West Conference championship. The Waimanalo, Hawai‘i native broke HPU’s all-time record for wins in a season, posting 23 victories over two losses. Kessell finished the season with a 1.68 ERA, also posting 19 complete games and 132 strikeouts. She also pitched one perfect game and one no-hitter.
Kessell’s best performance may have come in the Cal-State Stanislaus Tournament of Champions when she pitched a complete game five-hit shutout of West Region qualifier Cal-State San Bernardino. Her two losses came at the hands of Humboldt State, the West Region’s top team, and CSU-Stanislaus, who enter the West Region Championships as the third seed. At one point midway through the season, Kessell held the nation’s lowest ERA at 0.40.
HPU were not selected to the NCAA Regional Championships despite their 43-5-1 record.
Senas (Wahiawa, HI) and Plunkett (Pearl City, HI) received their first regional honors. Plunkett led the Pacific West Conference batting .431 to go along with nine doubles, two triples, eight homeruns, and 42 RBI. Senas, arguably the best overall player for the Sea Warriors, batted .346 with seven stolen bases and a .982 fielding percentage.
Sun Sets For Lady Sea Warriors
43 wins. 21-1-1 conference record. Third highest win total in HPU history. The historic season went largely unrecognized as HPU failed to receive a bid to NCAA West Region Championships. The conference selections were released Sunday night by the NCAA national office.
Despite finishing the season on an 18-game win streak, HPU continued to drop in the West Region poll, dropping one spot in each of the last two weeks of their season. At 43-5-1, the 2007 team hold the program’s all-time highest winning percentage for a season, yet became the first 40-win team to not advance to postseason play. HPU are also the first team to post an undefeated record in the state of Hawai‘i.
Co-Head Coach Howard Okita comments on the decision of the selection committee. “There’s really nothing we can do about it. The region voters felt we were not deserving of postseason play. It’s disappointing, but we knew for a while that our chances were slim.”
Only top-seeded Humboldt State finished with a better record that HPU.
There are a myriad of reasons why the West Region voters left HPU out in the cold. Unlike last season where HPU earned a postseason berth as a #5 seed, the quality of their PacWest opponents did not match that of last season. Wins against conference teams did not impress voters as much this time around.
HPU also needed a better performance at the Cal State University-Stanislaus Tournament of Champions held in California, posting just a 2-4 record. HPU did top eighth seeded Cal State San Bernardino 5-0, and fell in three one-run games to the eventual top three seeds. One more win may have swung the voters in HPU’s favor.
With sophomore sensations Casey Sugihara and Ciera Senas, and the PacWest’s reigning batting champion in Krystal Plunkett, the Sea Warriors now look toward next season and another run for the NCAA West Regional Championships.
Hopefully the sun will stay in the horizon a bit longer.

Kaneohe, HI (4/27/08) – At Sea Warrior Field, HPU won their final regular season games, topping UH-Hilo 7-3 in game one and 7-0 in game two. The Sea Warriors closed the regular season an impressive 43-5-1. UH-Hilo finished their season at 9-17-1.

HPU and Chaminade treated their fans to an exciting hard fought game in the opener. Courtney Kessell took the mound for HPU and coasted through the first five innings. RBI singles by Ciera Senas (2-4) and Jessica Adolph (1-3) in the second and fifth innings, respectively, gave HPU a 2-0 lead.
In top of the sixth inning, Chaminade immediately leveled the score on a Brandi Sasaki two-run homerun. HPU responded in the bottom of the inning, as Puna Waiolama (1-3) crushed a homerun of her own to give the lead back to HPU, 3-2.

HPU Sweep Rival UH-Hilo
Hilo, HI (4/17/08) – At the UH-Hilo Softball Field, HPU swept a doubleheader at the hands of UH-Hilo. HPU took game one 5-4 in another tight battle and closed the series with an 11-1 game two rout. The Sea Warriors improve to 36-5-1 while the Lady Vulcans drop to 9-11-1.
Game one proved to be another fierce contest between the two PacWest rivals. The Sea Warriors appeared to have grabbed a firm hold of the game after their half of the first inning. A two-RBI double by Krystal Plunkett (1-4) helped HPU to a four-run first inning.
UHH would match HPU in the bottom of the inning. With run on the board, Jerica Fasqua (1-3) crushed a three-run homerun over the right field fence to instantly tie the game at 4-4.
The offensive explosions would not carry on for either team. The 4-4 score held up until the top of the seventh inning. With a full count, Jessica Adolph (3-4, 3 RBI) drove a pitch through the middle of the infield to drive in pinchrunner Ashley Fernandez for what proved to be the gamewinner.

Champions Again, Sea Warriors Claim Conference Title
Queen Creek, AZ (4/14/08) – For the second year running the HPU softball team captured the Pacific West Conference title. After a weekend sweep of Chaminade, HPU grabbed a six-game lead over second place Dixie State College with only four conference games to play.
