A current HPU student majoring in public relations has created a non-profit organization to aid families with funeral costs of unforeseen tragedies. The Sleep in Peace Foundation provides financial assistance for families who lose a loved one due to a violent crime or unexpected accident.
The foundation distributes money based on various factors such as income bracket or number of children in the family.
It is currently the only service of its kind in Michigan.
"My father's death was the motivation," said 24-year-old Christian Monk, who founded the organization last year. "I decided this was something I had to do."
The money-strapped student struggled to give a proper burial to her father, who was fatally shot in Monk's hometown of Detroit in August 2006.
