Psychology Student, Jaclyn Petrus

Jaclyn M. Petrus (Magna Cum Laude, B.A. 2007)  Ms. Petrus was selected to be the undergraduate Valedictory speaker at the Winter, 2008 commencement.  A graduate of Punahou High School, Jaclyn  is using her bachelor’s degree as a stepping stone to a master’s degree. “I hope to become a clinical psychologist, although I would also love to teach at the university level.”

Jaclyn started college on the East Coast, but returned to the islands after deciding she wanted to be closer to home. She transferred to HPU and became active in various mental health organizations.  She proved that she is able to handle a full plate – earning a 3.94 cumulative grade point average and a 4.0 in her major while volunteering at Hawai‘i State Hospital, serving as president of the Psi Chi psychology honor society, and authoring a handbook on eating disorders.

“I would recommend HPU because it is very hard to get lost in the crowd, as could happen in larger universities,” she said. “The professors are extremely invested in each student’s education and success.”

ELS Language Center at Hawai'i Pacific University

Hawai‘i Pacific University (HPU) is excited to be welcoming ELS Language Centers (ELS) onto our campus this summer.  Beginning June 2, 2008 ELS, the international leader in academic English-language preparation, will be providing intensive English training, semi-intensive English training and their American Explorer program on HPU’s downtown Honolulu campus. These programs will replace HPU’s English Foundations Program (EFP), Proficiency in English Program (PEP) and Group English Program (GEP).

ELS Language Centers operates more than 45  intensive English language centers throughout the U.S., most of which are  located on college campuses.  ELS offers Intensive (30 lessons per week), Semi Intensive (20 lessons per week), and American Explorer (15 lessons per week) programs organized over 4-week sessions.  Four weeks are required to complete each level in the ELS 12-level curriculum.  ELS's 12-level program ranges from absolute beginner to the highly advanced level needed for university entry.

HPU will accept a certificate of completion of level 112 of the ELS  intensive program in place of our TOEFL requirement, and will offer "conditional letters of admission" for all students who meet HPU's academic requirements but have not yet satisfied our minimum English requirement.  Please note that students who are in levels 110, 111 or 112 may enroll concurrently at HPU, earning credits that can be used towards a degree.

ELS students are integrated into HPU's student life experience, providing students the opportunity to make friends with American and other international students from the moment you arrive, so that by the time you are ready to matriculate into full-time study at HPU, you will be fully oriented and prepared for your HPU education.

Students not meeting the University’s English requirements will need to apply to both the HPU ELS Center and HPU.
